Education:  Sunday School   Small Group Ministries

Moody United Methodist offers many opportunities for spiritual growth. We have Sunday School classes for all ages, special bible studies, youth fellowships, children's church, children and adult choirs. Christian growth is our goal for every member. Come and join us as we seek out God's purpose in our lives. Follow the links below for more information.

We are re-instituting the century old Methodist tradition of small groups. These groups may range from accountability groups, discipleship, Bible studies, crafting, outdoors activities, Fatherhood Group, and many more. If you care to be a part, please come on in, even if you're not a member of this church. Too, if there is a small group that you want to initiate or that you think will serve the Moody Community, please let us know. You don't even have to be a member of Moody UMC or attend here to come and enjoy a group.

Sunday School Classes:

The Sunday School classes start at 9:30. While ever desiring to change to meet our demographic needs, the following classes are currently offered.

Children: for additional Children Ministry, see the link on our website.

Nursery: Venice McNutt is our nursery coordinator. There are two sides to the same nursery. On one side are babies and on the other, larger side are toddlers. This is indeed a blessed ministry and we always look forward to more people willing to serve these precious children of God. The nursery is located in the middle of the building complex connecting the sanctuary to the fellowship hall.

Kindergarten: Carol Turnipseed and Beth DeLorme teach this four to five age group. This is a vital, lively, and fulfilling area of ministry. They would welcome anyone who wishes to share in the blessings of kindergarten ministry. They meet in a room behind the choir loft.

Elementary Grades: These grades, 1-4, provide a transition from kindergarten to childhood. It is in this age group that many children begin their real understanding of who Jesus is as well as learning important biblical stories. Their classroom is located in the rear room of the fellowship hall. Catherine Davis is the teacher.

Tweenagers: This special age group includes students in grades 5-6. Building upon the foundations laid in the Elementary Grade class, students transition from learning about stories in the Bible to learning the spiritual truths these stories represent. Spiritual formation takes root in this age group and many of their morals and standards for future decision-making are embedded in their spirits. This area of ministry is one where we need the most growth. The classroom is also located behind the choir loft. Teresa Pearson is the teacher.

Youth: Currently, junior high and senior high youth meet as one group.  We try to connect with youth on several levels. One of these is spiritual formation. Currently, on Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m., our youth engage in Bible Study. On Wednesday nights, after our fellowship dinner, the youth gather at 7:00 p.m. for an issue driven study and discussion on how young adult Christians relate to real world issues that they face in our society.

There are a variety of activities for youth to engage in. During the school year, we plan about one fun activity a month. Many of these are seasonal activities. During the summer, we plan even more activities for our youth and their friends. There are sign-up sheets on the youth bulletin board, just down the hall from the fellowship hall. Again, see our link on the website for upcoming activities.

Temporarily the youth meet in the fellowship hall on Sunday mornings for Sunday School class. On Sunday and Wednesday evenings, we meet in the office complex in the conference room. Currently, the “youth room” is being repainted and renovated. Once complete, we will have all of our meetings in there.

 Adult Christian Education:

The Seekers: This group of ladies meet in the Narthex area during Sunday School in the room that serves as the ‘cry room’ during worship. The facilitator is Sarah Cain. They are a group of open and loving people who welcome newcomers into their midst.

The Gleaners: Meeting in the room behind the sanctuary choir loft, this class is also a mixed group of men and women of various ages and marital status. Gene Davis facilitates the class in discovering biblical truths to apply to their lives.

The Young Adults: Don’t be fooled by this name! Members are of various ages, but young at heart. Erlene Cryar leads this class that meets in the conference room of the office complex.

Lighthouse: While certainly open to anyone who would want to join, the demographics of this class consist mostly of adults between 18-30 years old of various marital status. Sherry Sublett facilitates the Lighthouse, named so to imply showing others the light to Jesus Christ.

Small Groups:

We are excited about our small groups here at Moody UMC and look forward with anticipation to the formation of more groups and increased participation in the small group ministry. Not only does our roots as Methodists go back to this tradition started by John and Charles Wesley, but our Lord, Jesus Christ himself, as well as the early church, worked in the context of small groups. We urge everyone to become involved in one of the groups.

Shanghai: No, this is not a verb as if to be ‘shanghaied’! It is a group of people who gather every Tuesday morning at 9:00 for a card game called Shanghai. They say the game is easy to learn and invite everyone, of any age, gender, background, or faith to join them for fun. They also bring and share lunch together. The meeting place is the conference room in the office complex.

Loving Hands: This group meets to make items such as hats, bibs, blankets, gowns for premature babies, etc. and donates to nursing homes, Children's Hospital and other local areas where needed. This group has grown rapidly and consist of a day group encompassing community involvement. You may call the church office at 640-7491 for more information. Erlene Cryar is the leader of this group.

Women’s Bible Study: A women’s Bible Study meets on Wednesday mornings at 9:00. Erlene Cryar also leads this study. Their curriculum is tailored for the woman of this day, regardless of age. They explore Bible truths and discuss applying these truths to their everyday lives.

Bible Study: On Monday nights at 7:00 pm, there is another Bible Study. Cathy Franklin is the leader.

PAWS: Kathy Heath leads PAWS. This is a ministry to Convalescent Homes. She takes pets to the homes. Academic research tells us that residents of such facilities respond very well to animals and small children. It stimulates all of their senses and increases brain function.

Mother’s Day Out: This is an important ministry to the families of the community and the church. Venice McNutt, our nursery coordinator, supervises Mother’s Day Out. Mother's Day Out is offered on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday of each week from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Emmaus Reunion: Many of our members participated in an enriching spiritual retreat named “The Road to Emmaus”. It finds its name from the biblical account shortly after our Lord’s resurrection when he appeared to two disciples who were walking along the road leading to the village of Emmaus. Those who have completed the retreat meet at regular intervals to strengthen each other’s faith.

Groups in Planning Stations: The following are some ideas we have for developing other small groups. In all things, we want to show forth the grace, peace, and love of Jesus Christ and do the work of the Gospel by demonstrating our faith by our works, as illustrated in the Book of James.

·    Karaoke Group

·    Outdoorsman Group for our fishers, hunters, campers, boaters

·    Various discipleship groups

·    Fatherhood Group for support of fathers of all ages

·    Stephen’s Group for servant hood to the church and community who would be willing to help people with work from cleaning, to yard work, to maintenance and other appropriate areas

·    Hospitality Group with the purpose of following up where the evangelism visitation committee leaves off and in coordinating a few meals for those sick or who have temporary needs

·    Incarcerated Services will be involved in a variety of ministry services to those incarcerated and their families

·    Support Groups for any reasons such as divorce, bereavement, parenting, addictions, etc

·    Topical Bible Studies

·    Accountability Groups

·    Computer/Electronic Meeting Group to meet online and share with each other, developing relationships in this fashion and discussing Christ and related topics that come up

·    Mentoring Group will be some of our members with much of lives’ experiences behind them and who are willing to meet with other people from youth to adults for issues confronting them as well as for business mentoring and relationship building and strengthening others in Christ

·    The Joseph Group would be comprised of people gifted in woodwork and carpentry who would be willing to teach others as well as organizing and completing minor repairs in homes and at church
